Assessments

Learn how to use assessments to streamline your screening process and tailor evaluations to each role. Make faster, more confident hiring decisions by sending tests directly from candidate profiles.

Candidate assessments allow you to evaluate specific skills, traits, or expertise by assigning structured tests. You can choose from pre-built options or create customised questions to match the role's requirements.

These assessments are sent to candidates via email, and results are returned directly to their application view—making it easy to compare candidates and decide who to move forward.

Assessments offer several advantages for hiring teams:

  • Efficient screening: Quickly filter for top candidates by automatically testing for skills, qualifications, or fit.

  • Data-driven decisions: Reduce bias by using standardised scores and structured evaluations.

  • Improved hiring quality: Better assess technical, cognitive, or behavioural traits to find stronger hires.

  • Customisation: Build assessments that reflect your team’s needs and the unique demands of each role.

To use this feature effectively:

  • Use assessments early in the hiring process to save time on initial screening.

  • Combine assessment results with structured interviews and scorecards.

  • Be transparent with candidates about why you’re using tests and what they measure.

  • Tailor each test to the role, not just the company—context matters.

Send an assessment

1

Open the candidate profile

You can access a candidate profile from several areas within JOIN:

  • From the Jobs tab: Click on an active job, then select the candidate you want to evaluate

  • From the Talent pool tab: Search or filter to find the candidate, then open their profile

  • From the Applications tab: Locate the relevant candidate in the list and click to open their profile

  • Using the search bar: Type the candidate's name and click to open their profile from the dropdown list

2

Go to the 'Assessments' tab

Once inside the candidate profile:

  1. Click the Assessments sub-tab

  2. Select Send assessment or click the + icon and choose Assessment

3

Choose and configure the assessment

  1. If the candidate has applied to multiple jobs, you will see a Job dropdown and must select the relevant job that the assessment should be assigned to. If the candidate has only applied to one job, the job will be auto-selected and the field will not appear.

  2. Use the Assessment dropdown to select a previously created test. If you don't see a relevant test in the dropdown meny, click the Configure link to open the full test library in a new tab: https://assessments.join.com/assessments to add a test.

You will only see assessments here that have already been configured. If this is your first time using assessments or no tests have been added to your assessment library yet, the dropdown will appear empty. In that case, click the Configure link to open the full test library in a new tab: https://assessments.join.com/assessments. From this library, you can either select existing tests and click Use to add them to your assessments, or create a new one from scratch. Once a test has been added to your assessments, it will appear in the dropdown menu back in the candidate profile view.

  1. Click Send to email the assessment to the candidate. The assessment email is sent automatically from JOIN. Candidates complete the test through the linked platform.
